The Proper way to jump a vehicle

As a car owner, you know that jump-starting your car is inevitable. You never know when your battery will give up on you, and you will have to rely on a friend or a kind stranger to jump-start your vehicle. Jump-starting a car may seem easy, but it requires proper knowledge and precautions to avoid injuries and damage to your car's electronic parts.

In this article, we will guide you on how to jump a vehicle properly and the gauge of the jumper cables you should use, depending on the situation.

What do you need to jump a car?

Before we get into the steps on how to jump a car, make sure you have the following;

- A working car with a good battery

- Jumper cables (which we will discuss below)

- Protective gloves

- Safety gloves and glasses (optional)

Here is how you can use jumper cables properly to jumpstart your vehicle by following these steps:

1. Bring the two vehicles close enough for the cables to reach both batteries easily.

2. Switch off the engine and all electrical equipment of both vehicles, e.g., radio, headlights.

3. Open the hood and locate the batteries. Make sure you have enough room to work.

4. Wear protective gloves and be very careful with the clamps and the battery. Batteries contain sulfuric acid, which can cause skin burns and damage clothes.

5. Take one of the red cables and attach the clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.

6. Take the other end of the red cable, and attach the other clamp to the positive terminal of the booster car's battery.

7. Take one of the black cables and attach the clamp to the negative terminal of the booster car's battery.

8. Take the other end of the black cable and clamp it to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car that is away from the battery. The engine block is usually a good place. Make sure it's a clean metal surface that's not too far away from the battery.

9. Start the engine of the booster car and let it run for a few minutes.

10. Start the engine of the car with the dead battery.

11. If the car starts, carefully remove the cables in reverse order, starting with the negative cable of the dead vehicle and avoiding touching any metal part of the cables, clamps, or batteries.

12. If the car still won't start, wait another five minutes and try again.

Note: If the car doesn't start after several attempts, there may be another issue apart from the battery that needs to be examined by a professional mechanic. If you need roadside assistance nationwide or more information https://stuck.solutions/ref/114/
